Underworld
The Underworld is a desolate and ominous realm located within the Plane of Transcendence. It is a place of darkness and despair, where the souls of those who paid false fealty to the gods or who feigned faith for personal gain are condemned to eternal exile. The realm is a labyrinth of twisting tunnels and caverns, filled with jagged rocks and icy stalactites. The air is thick with the stench of decay and the sounds of moaning and wailing echo through the halls.
The landscape of the Underworld is desolate and barren, with no sign of life or growth. The ground is a cold, hard rock, and the only light comes from the dim glow of flickering torches and the occasional burst of flame from pits of magma that dot the landscape. The temperature is frigid, with icy winds blowing through the tunnels and chilling the bones of any unfortunate souls trapped within.
The creatures that inhabit the Underworld are twisted and malevolent, reflecting the dark and chaotic nature of the realm. Demons and other evil entities lurk in the shadows, waiting to torment and prey upon the lost souls that wander through the tunnels. Fiery monsters roam the caverns, their eyes glowing with an inner inferno as they hunt for prey.
Souls that are consigned to the Underworld are not physically tortured, but the persistent fear and loneliness become its own kind of torment. The souls are trapped in a perpetual state of isolation, forced to wander aimlessly through the winding tunnels without any hope of escape or companionship. The darkness and emptiness are suffocating, and the only sounds are the echoes of one's own footsteps and the haunting whispers of lost souls.
Despite the despair and hopelessness that pervades the Underworld, there are occasional moments of respite for those who are able to find them. Hidden alcoves and caves provide temporary shelter from the darkness and the creatures that roam the tunnels. Some souls even find solace in the company of other lost souls, forming small communities and bonds of companionship in the face of their eternal exile. However, these moments of light are fleeting and rare, and the majority of souls in the Underworld are doomed to an eternity of fear, loneliness, and despair.
Redemption¶
Churuer's mercy and compassion knew no bounds, even for those who were consigned to the Underworld. He believed that every soul had the potential for redemption, no matter how wicked their deeds in life may have been. To this end, he offered them a chance to earn their redemption through a process of suffering and penance.
Those souls who wished to redeem themselves were offered a path of atonement. They would be forced to confront their darkest fears and deepest regrets, reliving the moments of their life that led them to their downfall. The process was grueling and painful, and some souls would spend centuries or even millennia in this state, but it was a necessary step on the road to redemption.
As they made progress on their journey, the souls would begin to feel a sense of hope and renewal. The darkness that had consumed them would begin to lift, and they would feel a renewed sense of purpose and clarity. They would be given tasks to perform, helping other lost souls find their own path to redemption and assisting in the running of the Underworld.
Finally, after what seemed like an eternity, the souls would be deemed ready for redemption. They would be released from the Underworld and allowed to enter the Halls of the Afterlife, where they would find eternal rest and peace. Their souls would be cleansed of their sins, and they would be welcomed into the fold of the faithful.
This process was not easy, and it was not guaranteed to succeed. But for those souls who truly sought redemption and were willing to put in the work to achieve it, the rewards were beyond measure. They would find a sense of peace and fulfillment that they had never known in life, and they would be reunited with loved ones who had passed on before them.
Ocean of Tears¶
It is said that whenever Cheruer consigns a soul to the Underworld he sheds a single tear and over time those tears have formed an ocean.
The Ocean of Tears is a vast and sorrowful body of water that spans the depths of the Underworld. It is said to be a beautiful and terrifying place, home to strange and otherworldly creatures that are unlike anything seen on the mortal plane. The ocean is perpetually shrouded in a thick mist, and the only light comes from the occasional flicker of luminescent creatures that swim in the depths.
The waters are said to be icy cold and deep, with treacherous and unpredictable currents. The surface of the ocean is constantly roiling and churning, as if in perpetual agony. Despite its fearsome reputation, some souls are drawn to the Ocean of Tears, seeking solace in its depths or hoping to find a way to escape the Underworld.
However, the ocean is also a place of great sorrow and despair. Cheruer's tears are so salty that they can burn the souls of the departed, and the waves are so violent that they can drag a soul down to the depths of the ocean. The ocean is said to be haunted by the spirits of the damned, who are trapped within its depths for all eternity. Their ghostly cries and moans can be heard echoing across the waves, and some say that the spirits can even reach out and drag unsuspecting souls beneath the surface.
Those who venture too close to the water's edge do so at their own peril, for the Ocean of Tears is a place of unrelenting sorrow and suffering. The leviathans and other creatures that patrol the depths wait to drag unwary souls into the inky blackness below. The ocean may be beautiful, but it is also a reminder of the pain and suffering that is the fate of those who have strayed from the path of righteousness.
It is said that eventually, all souls who do not find redemption in the Underworld will be drawn inexorably towards the Ocean of Tears. The ocean is a final destination for those souls that are irredeemable, where they will be lost forever in its icy depths.
Localized Phenomena¶
In the Underworld, there are many supernatural phenomena that add to the constant state of fear and loneliness. For example, the tunnels and caverns are alive with eerie whispers and disembodied voices that seem to come from nowhere and everywhere at once. These whispers taunt and tease the lost souls, promising them a way out or mocking them for their sins.
The darkness of the Underworld is also alive, constantly shifting and moving like a living thing. Strange shadows dance and writhe on the walls, taking on the forms of nightmarish creatures and distorted faces. These shadows seem to follow the lost souls, always just out of sight but never far away.
The temperature in the Underworld is also a source of torment. At times it can be icy cold, causing the souls to shiver and shake uncontrollably. Other times it can be searingly hot, making it difficult to breathe and causing them to feel as if they are burning alive.
One of the most terrifying phenomena in the Underworld is the appearance of ghostly apparitions. These spirits are the tortured souls of those who have been consigned to the realm for eternity. They appear suddenly and without warning, their faces contorted in agony as they moan and scream in torment. Their presence serves as a constant reminder of the fate that awaits those who are condemned to the realm.
Fauna & Flora¶
The Underworld is a desolate and barren realm, devoid of life and growth. However, there are some strange and terrifying creatures that inhabit this bleak landscape.
One of the most fearsome creatures of the Underworld is the Shadow Hound. These beasts are large, black canines with eyes that glow like molten lava. They hunt in packs, and their howls can be heard echoing through the tunnels and caverns of the underworld. Those who encounter these creatures quickly learn to fear their deadly jaws and razor-sharp claws.
Another creature found in the Underworld is the Death Worm. These giant, serpentine beasts are covered in sharp, bony plates that allow them to tunnel through the hard rock of the underworld. They are rarely seen, but their presence can be felt in the deep, rumbling vibrations that fill the tunnels when they move.
The flora of the Underworld is equally bleak and desolate. The only plants that grow in this realm are small, twisted shrubs that cling to life in the cracks and crevices of the rock. These plants have adapted to the harsh conditions of the underworld, and their thorny branches are a reminder of the dangers that lurk within this realm.
