Appearance¶
Xam is a human man with light skin, white hair, and a cautious, observant demeanor. He is rarely the loudest person in a room and often seems to be studying those around him, as though expecting their opinions of him to change at any moment.
Biography¶
The Xam'dar family was once respected within Agrovionimb. At some point in the past, however, a member of the family committed some grave mistake—or perhaps merely an act that the city never forgave. Whatever the truth, the family's reputation suffered greatly.
Though the details have become muddled with time, Xam grew up believing that his family had been shunned and disgraced. The shadow of that belief shaped nearly every aspect of his life.
Ashamed of his surname, he often introduces himself simply as Xam, avoiding the use of his full name whenever possible. He keeps others at a distance, fearing ridicule and rejection, and interprets even minor slights as confirmation that the world looks down upon him.
At the same time, he desperately wishes to restore the honor of his family and prove—to both himself and others—that the name Xam'dar still has worth. This desire for recognition and redemption has driven many of his decisions and ultimately led him to volunteer for dangerous work.
Xam joined the expedition into the Dreadmist Swamp and was one of only seven survivors of the encounter with The Troll of Dreadmist. During the expedition, he spent as much time watching the people around him as he did the dangers of the swamp itself.
Now he has volunteered once again to sail aboard the Dawn Seeker, hoping that great deeds and great dangers might finally earn him the respect he believes has been denied to him.
Personality¶
Xam is intelligent, cautious, and surprisingly perceptive. He is skilled at reading people, though his conclusions are often colored by his own insecurities.
Despite believing that others dislike or judge him, he maintains a generally optimistic outward demeanor and continues to seek approval and acceptance from those around him.
He desires recognition and fears humiliation in equal measure.
More than anything, Xam wants to matter.
Relationships¶
The Xam'dar Family: A source of both pride and embarrassment. Xam hopes one day to restore the family's reputation, though he may care even more about escaping its shadow.
The Survivors of the Dreadmist Expedition: The first people in many years with whom Xam has shared genuine hardship and danger. Though he may not realize it, several of them already think more highly of him than he thinks they do.
