Velhelsin Oreiner¶
Her Imperial Majesty, Empress Velhelsin Oreiner, is one of the most powerful and controversial figures in the history of Andórë. Once the celebrated prodigy of the Kingdom of Oreinerius and eldest child of King Filverel Oreiner, her refusal to accept her younger brother Eilauver's ascension ignited the Great Elf War and shattered the unity of elven civilization.
Though her attempt to destroy Oreinerius ended in divine catastrophe and transformed her people into the first Drow, Velhelsin endured through the use of clone magic and continues to rule the Velhelsinese Empire more than four millennia after her birth.

Appearance¶
Physical Description¶
Velhelsin possesses a tall, slender, aristocratic figure and appears physically youthful despite her immense age, her longevity sustained through the repeated use of clone magic.
Her beauty is the subject of countless poems, paintings, and political propaganda throughout the empire. Even her enemies rarely deny that she is one of the most beautiful women ever to live.
As a Drow, Velhelsin possesses smooth ashen-gray skin and luminous violet-crimson eyes that seem almost to glow in dim light. Her features are angular and severe, with high cheekbones, elegantly pointed ears, and an unnervingly intense gaze that many find difficult to meet for long.
Her long silver-white hair falls in loose waves and is often adorned with delicate chains, gemstones, and imperial jewelry. Despite her apparent youth, there is an agelessness to her face and a weight to her expression that betrays her immense years.
She carries herself with perfect posture and an almost supernatural poise, every movement deliberate and measured. Even standing still, she projects an overwhelming sense of authority.
Before the Divine Curse transformed her people into the first Drow, contemporary accounts describe Velhelsin as possessing warm golden-tan skin, deep raven-black hair, and the same striking violet eyes she bears today. These descriptions have passed into legend, and many living elves find it difficult to imagine the Dark Empress as anything other than she now appears.

Apparel & Accessories¶
Velhelsin dresses in magnificent imperial regalia of black, deep violet, and silver.
She favors flowing robes and gowns of extraordinary craftsmanship, embroidered with intricate arcane motifs and adorned with chains of amethyst, ruby, and enchanted gemstones. Her clothing is simultaneously regal and intimidating, designed to project both beauty and power.
She wears numerous pieces of enchanted jewelry, many of which are ancient relics or creations of her own design.
Upon formal occasions, she wears the Crown of the Shadow Empire, a dark and elaborate diadem of shadow-forged metal set with violet gemstones.
Specialized Equipment¶
- An ornate arcane focus staff crowned by a large violet crystal.
- Illusion-woven regalia capable of altering its appearance and concealing magical protections.
- Numerous enchanted rings, necklaces, and bracelets.
- Court of Shadows sigils and seals of imperial authority.

Physical Quirks¶
Velhelsin rarely blinks and maintains perfect posture.
She moves slowly and deliberately, almost never making unnecessary motions. Her expression changes little, and even her smiles often seem carefully measured.
Those who have stood in her presence frequently remark that she appears almost sculpted rather than alive, as though every gesture and expression has been practiced to perfection over thousands of years.
Mental Characteristics¶
Personal History¶
Velhelsin was born the eldest child of King Filverel Oreiner and from an early age displayed extraordinary intelligence, magical talent, and personal charisma.
As a princess of Oreinerius, she excelled in nearly every field expected of elven nobility and quickly developed a reputation as one of the greatest prodigies of her age. She became a celebrated arcanist, an accomplished administrator, and a gifted stateswoman.
She secretly became a champion of Xokone, Goddess of Beauty, whose divine favor enhanced both her magical talents and her extraordinary personal magnetism.
When her father named her younger brother Eilauver his heir, Velhelsin considered the decision not merely insulting, but irrational. In her mind, she was plainly the more capable ruler.
Her rebellion and the resulting Great Elf War would reshape the world forever.
The Divine Curse that transformed her people into the first Drow and the subsequent loss of Xokone's favor remain the defining events of her life.
Though she has ruled for over four millennia, she has never married, never borne children, and rarely speaks of what might happen after her death. To Velhelsin, the Empire and herself are almost inseparable concepts.

Relationships¶
Family¶
- King Filverel Oreiner — Father and former King of Oreinerius. His decision to name Eilauver heir instead of Velhelsin irrevocably altered the course of history.
- Queen Aelinora Oreiner — Mother. Velhelsin rarely speaks of her publicly.
- King Eilauver Oreiner — Younger brother, rival, and the only living person who truly remembers the woman she was before the Great Elf War.
- The Royal House of Oreiner — The dynasty from which both the Kingdom of Oreinerius and the Velhelsinese Empire ultimately descend.
Friends & Allies¶
- Court of Shadows — Her closest advisors and agents.
- Imperial Senate — The governing body through which much of the Empire's administration is conducted.
- The Goblinoid Clans and Warlords — Descendants of the tribes that first followed her during the Great Elf War and helped forge the Empire.
The Royal Consort¶
Throughout her long reign, Velhelsin has always maintained a single royal consort and, without exception, that consort has always been an Eladrin, regardless of sex or gender.
These relationships are entirely voluntary, and no evidence has ever suggested magical coercion or manipulation.
The reasons for the Empress's preference remain a matter of speculation among historians and courtiers. Many believe it stems from her well-known appreciation for beauty, while others argue that it reflects her philosophy of excellence and exceptionalism.
Those closest to the throne have suggested a simpler explanation:
In Velhelsin's eyes, the only elves worthy of sharing her bed are those whom the gods themselves have touched.
Despite maintaining consorts throughout her reign, Velhelsin has never married and has never borne children.
Rivals & Enemies¶
- King Eilauver Oreiner — Younger brother, oldest rival, and perhaps the only person in the world whom Velhelsin regards as her true equal.
She has never considered him weak, foolish, or undeserving of greatness. Her grievance is, and always has been, that greatness should have worn her crown instead of his.
To Velhelsin, Eilauver represents a fundamental disagreement about power itself. Where she believes the capable have a duty to rule, Eilauver believes power exists to serve others.
Their rivalry has shaped the history of Andórë for more than four thousand years.
- The Kingdom of Oreinerius — The ancient kingdom she once sought to rule and later to destroy.
- The Pantheon of Andórë — Particularly the goddess Xokone, whose judgment transformed her people into the Drow. Though the Empire publicly venerates the gods, Velhelsin's relationship with the divine remains deeply complicated.
Organizations¶
- Velhelsinese Empire — Founder and reigning Empress.
- Court of Shadows — Supreme authority.
- Imperial Senate — Final arbiter and sovereign.
- Cult of Xokone — Former champion and one of its most famous historical figures.
History¶
Early Life¶
Princess Velhelsin Oreiner was born in -4,300 BtF as the first child of King Filverel Oreiner and Queen Aelinora Oreiner.
From an early age she demonstrated extraordinary intelligence and magical talent. Court records describe her as precocious, ambitious, and remarkably charismatic. She excelled in every field expected of elven nobility and quickly gained a reputation as one of the most gifted individuals of her generation.
Fifty years later, her younger brother Eilauver was born. Despite their differences, the two siblings were initially close and spent much of their youth studying, debating, and learning together.
As the children matured, it became increasingly apparent that both possessed the qualities necessary to rule.
In -3,800 BtF, King Filverel implemented the so-called Two State Solution, dividing the administration of the kingdom into northern and southern realms. Velhelsin was entrusted with governing the north while Eilauver ruled the south, both remaining subordinate to their father.
The arrangement proved remarkably successful.
Both states prospered under their respective rulers, and for centuries many assumed that the Kingdom of Oreinerius had secured an age of unprecedented stability.
Unfortunately, the experiment also allowed the differences between the siblings to become increasingly pronounced.
Where Eilauver cultivated consensus and personal loyalty, Velhelsin pursued efficiency, excellence, and central authority.
The question of succession slowly became unavoidable.
Rise to Prominence¶
When King Filverel eventually declared Eilauver his heir, Velhelsin refused to accept the decision.
She believed herself the more capable ruler and regarded her father's choice as irrational, unjust, and ultimately harmful to the kingdom.
What began as a dispute over succession escalated into the Great Elf War, a conflict that would last for over a thousand years.
During the war, Velhelsin demonstrated extraordinary political and military skill. She forged alliances with goblin, hobgoblin, and bugbear tribes that had long suffered under elven domination, promising them autonomy and a place within a new order. Together they founded the Velhelsinese Empire, transforming what had begun as a dynastic conflict into the birth of an entirely new nation.
Yet even the power of her new empire proved insufficient to secure victory.
Refusing to accept stalemate, Velhelsin conceived the Great Ritual, an unprecedented magical undertaking intended to draw power from the gods themselves and unleash it upon Oreinerius.
The ritual failed.
The gods descended in wrath and pronounced judgment upon the Empire.
The elves of Velhelsin's realm were transformed into the first Drow, and the Great Elf War finally came to an end.
The catastrophe permanently altered the course of history and made Velhelsin one of the most infamous figures in the world.
Major Accomplishments¶
- Founder of the Velhelsinese Empire.
- One of the greatest arcanists in the history of Andórë.
- Master of enchantment and illusion magic.
- United numerous goblinoid tribes beneath a single imperial authority.
- Created one of the world's most stable and efficient states.
- Preserved her own life for over four millennia through the use of clone magic.
- Successfully integrated elves, drow, goblinoids, and other peoples into a functioning imperial society.
- Played a major role in ending the Great War through the Marate Peace Accords.
Failures & Embarrassments¶
- The failure of the Great Ritual and the resulting Descent of the Drow.
- The permanent sundering of elven civilization.
- The loss of divine favor from Xokone.
- The devastation and immense loss of life caused by the Great Elf War.
- The enduring hostility between Oreinerius and the Empire.
Though seldom acknowledged publicly, many historians believe that Velhelsin's greatest failure was not the creation of the Drow, but her inability to reconcile with her brother before the world was forever changed.
Current Circumstances¶
More than four thousand years after her birth and over two millennia after the Descent of the Drow, Velhelsin continues to reign as Empress of the Velhelsinese Empire.
During the Great War, the Empire seized substantial territories from the Kingdom of Oreinerius. Following prolonged negotiations at the Marate Peace Accords, Velhelsin agreed to return the captured population while retaining the conquered lands. King Eilauver reluctantly accepted these terms to prevent the resumption of hostilities and further suffering among his people.
In the centuries since, Velhelsin has remained one of the most influential and feared rulers in the world.
Though many view her as a tyrant and others as a visionary, few dispute her competence or the remarkable durability of the Empire she created.
Even now, after more than four millennia upon the throne, the Dark Empress shows no sign of relinquishing power.
Social¶
Social Aptitude¶
Velhelsin is one of the most persuasive individuals in recorded history.
She possesses extraordinary personal charisma and an almost supernatural ability to command attention. She is equally capable of inspiring fierce loyalty, genuine admiration, and profound fear.
A consummate stateswoman, she understands politics, negotiation, and public perception better than almost any living ruler. Though often cold and distant, she is exceptionally skilled at reading people and tailoring her words to her audience.
Many who have met her describe the experience as unsettling, feeling as though they are speaking to someone who has already considered every possible outcome of the conversation.
Religious Views¶
Velhelsin's relationship with the gods is complicated.
In her youth, she was a devoted champion of Xokone and received the goddess's favor directly. The Divine Judgment that transformed her people into the Drow ended that relationship forever.
Unlike many of her subjects, Velhelsin does not worship the gods.
She neither loves nor hates them. Instead, she regards them much as one might regard a hurricane or an earthquake: immensely powerful beings whose existence is undeniable and whose actions can shape the course of history.
She considers the gods real, consequential, and worthy of respect, but not worthy of devotion.
The Empire imposes no restrictions upon religious worship, and Velhelsin has never attempted to suppress the veneration of the Pantheon among her people. Temples and priesthoods continue to flourish throughout the Empire.
Privately, however, she has little interest in prayer or ritual and rarely speaks of her former patron.
When asked about the gods, she has reportedly remarked:
"The gods are. That is sufficient reason to take them seriously."
Wealth & Financial State¶
Effectively limitless.
As Empress, Velhelsin commands the resources of one of the largest and wealthiest empires in the world.
Beyond the imperial treasury, she has accumulated over four millennia of personal wealth, including:
- Vast quantities of precious metals and gemstones.
- One of the world's largest collections of magical artifacts.
- Extensive libraries and repositories of arcane knowledge.
- Priceless works of art and historical relics.
Contacts & Relations¶
Velhelsin maintains relationships with rulers, scholars, and powerful individuals across the world.
Her most important political connections include:
- The Court of Shadows.
- The Imperial Senate.
- Numerous goblinoid kings and warlords.
- The rulers of the Great Nations.
- King Eilauver Oreiner.
- Dragon Queen Imelyn.
Despite her reputation, she is widely respected as an exceptionally competent ruler and stateswoman.
Representation & Legacy¶
To her supporters, Velhelsin is the founder and protector of the Velhelsinese Empire and the mother of the Drow people.
To her enemies, she is the architect of the Great Elf War and the woman whose ambition permanently divided elven civilization.
To historians, she is one of the most consequential individuals ever to live.
Her legacy cannot be separated from the Empire she created.
For over four thousand years, the Velhelsinese Empire has endured through war, catastrophe, and divine judgment under her rule.
Many scholars have therefore observed:
Velhelsin did not merely found the Empire.
In many respects, she became it.
Abilities¶
Combat Style¶
Velhelsin avoids direct physical confrontation whenever possible.
When threatened, she prefers to end conflicts through manipulation, misdirection, and overwhelming displays of magical superiority rather than brute force.
She excels at:
- Turning enemies against one another.
- Rendering dangerous individuals harmless through enchantment.
- Causing armies to surrender without battle.
- Breaking morale through fear and confusion.
- Removing key leaders from a conflict with precision and efficiency.
Her philosophy of warfare is simple:
The ideal battle is one in which the enemy realizes they have already lost.
Only when all other options have failed does she resort to lethal force.
Even then, she prefers precise and decisive magic over indiscriminate destruction.
Magical Abilities¶
Velhelsin is widely regarded as one of the greatest arcanists in the history of Andórë and is unquestionably the greatest living practitioner of Illusion and Enchantment magic.

Velhelsin's mastery of illusion borders upon the supernatural.

- Altering appearances and environments.
- Crafting vast and persistent illusions.

- Creating illusory creatures and entire landscapes.
- Concealing armies, fortifications, and magical effects.
Many historians believe some of her greatest works of illusion have persisted for centuries without ever being discovered.

- Influence the emotions of large groups.

- Induce terror, surrender, or incapacitation.
- Shatter minds through psychic assault.
Many rulers throughout history have quietly wondered whether they have ever truly disagreed with the Dark Empress at all.

She possesses extensive knowledge of:
- Magical wards.
- Countermagic.
- Protective enchantments.
- Magical barriers.
- Anti-divination measures.
Her personal defenses are considered among the most formidable in the world.
Conjuration¶
Velhelsin is also a capable conjurer and frequently supplements her own power through:
- Summoned servants.
- Conjured creatures.
- Temporary allies.
- Magical transportation.
She rarely fights alone if she can instead fight through proxies.
Clone Magic¶
Perhaps her greatest arcane achievement is the perfection of clone magic.
Through centuries of refinement, Velhelsin has effectively escaped old age and natural death.
The exact number and locations of her prepared bodies are among the Empire's most closely guarded secrets.
Special Abilities¶
- Extraordinary magical talent.
- One of the greatest living arcanists.
- Immense personal charisma.
- Master manipulator and strategist.
- Nearly unparalleled knowledge of magical theory.
- Effective immortality through clone magic.

The staff serves as both a symbol of imperial authority and one of her most potent magical implements.

Her imperial clothing is heavily enchanted and serves both practical and defensive purposes.
Among its known properties are:
- Protection against physical and magical harm.
- Concealment of magical effects.
- Alteration of appearance.
- Protection against divination.
Crown of the Shadow Empire¶
The imperial crown is one of the oldest symbols of the Empire and is itself a powerful magical artifact.
Its exact capabilities are known only to the Empress.
Personal Enchantments¶
Over four millennia of study, Velhelsin has surrounded herself with numerous magical protections and contingencies.
Scholars generally assume that any attempt to confront the Empress directly will involve:
- Illusions.
- Decoys.
- Magical wards.
- Contingency spells.
- Summoned allies.
- Prepared escape methods.
The extent of these precautions is unknown.
