Session Notes

Into the Hole

Seventh Day, 18th Firemoot, 1137 AoD
The party stood at the base of the great sad tree, staring into the hole that had opened beneath Anchor.

The darkness below seemed impossibly deep. It descended farther than even the party's darkvision could pierce. Stranger still, although the opening had collapsed in the middle of a swamp, no water poured into it. The pit was dry, dark, and wrong.

The group prepared to descend.

Ropes were tied together and secured around the large sad tree. Knots were added along the rope to make the climb easier. Before anyone went down, Venathrax climbed the tree and attempted to peer into the hole from above, but there was nothing useful to see from that angle.

Anchor descended first, followed by Xam.

They quickly discovered that they were not alone.

At the bottom of the pit, at least four giant centipedes waited in the darkness. More soon revealed themselves along the walls and floor.

Vash lit his lantern and began climbing down after them. Corq cast Levitate on himself and floated down along the rope, using it as a guide.

Battle in the Pit

The descent immediately turned chaotic.

Pethi attempted to leap down into the fight, but missed her landing. Xam tried to grab her as she fell, but could not stop her from dropping farther into the pit.

The centipedes swarmed from the darkness.

One bit Xam. Others crawled toward Anchor, Pethi, and Vash. Anchor struck at one with Booming Blade, while Vash fired his crossbow from the rope. Corq fired Ray of Frost at a centipede near Xam, and Venathrax began climbing down while hurling Eldritch Blast into the dark.

Xam struck one of the centipedes clinging to the wall above him, then jumped back to the rope.

The fight spread across the pit as more centipedes closed in.

Anchor unleashed Arms of Hadar, striking several centipedes at once, though Vash was caught in the spell's reach as well. Wrenn transformed into a wolf spider and climbed into the pit, killing one of the centipedes as she moved along the walls.

Vash found himself surrounded, drew his shortsword, and killed one of the creatures. Xam cut down another. Venathrax killed one from range.

The centipedes continued to bite and swarm, scoring several hits against Anchor, Vash, Pethi, and spider-Wrenn. Pethi fought back with punches, while Wrenn scuttled across the wall to support Pethi and Xam. Vash landed a devastating strike against one centipede, killing it far beyond what was necessary.

Finally, Corq killed the last of the creatures.

The Descent Completed

With the centipedes dead, the rest of the party finished climbing down.

Spider-Wrenn, Vash, Xam, and Corq reached the bottom quickly and without further issue. Pethi climbed down after them. The others followed, with spider-Wrenn helping Venathrax complete the descent safely.

The party now stood beneath the sad tree, at the bottom of the dry and impossible hole.

Venathrax tries to climb the tree to peek into the hole of the tree. Nothing there.
Anchor descends first and is followed by Xam.
At least 4 giant centipedes await at the bottom.
Vash lights his latern and starts down.
Corq casts levitate and hovers down along rope to guide him.
