The Prayer Meeting

Starweaver's Reckoning Fourth Day, 13th of Palesun, 1137 AoD
Suspecting that the weekly prayer group might reveal the truth behind the demonic symbols, Pethi rented a meeting room nearby while Wrenn took the more direct approach.

Transforming into a spider, Wrenn slipped unnoticed into the temple's private discussion chamber and hid among the furnishings.

The meeting was led by Belaia Bhovunath, accompanied by:
* Duzus Calafin-LightHair
* Whulehyn Rviaath
* Alar Nughelath
Despite being recorded as a simple faith discussion for laborers, the meeting quickly took a darker turn.

The shipbuilders immediately began discussing Durgat's arrest and the search of her home.

More importantly, they admitted responsibility for the demonic markings aboard the Dawn Seeker.

From their conversation, we learned several disturbing facts:

  • The symbols were part of a larger geometric design.
  • The ritual circle had never been completed.
  • The markings discovered by the investigators represented only a portion of the whole.
  • The participants believed the ritual had almost succeeded.

They spoke cryptically of the event:

"The ship was never anchored."

And:

"The water still boiled."

Whatever happened aboard the Dawn Seeker, they believe something answered their call.

Belaia's explanation was even more unsettling.

For eleven centuries, she claimed, the people of Agrovionimb had mistaken denial for hope. The world had already ended, and the city persisted only because its people refused to accept that truth.

She declared that the Dawn Seeker was meant to carry truth instead of lies.

Before the meeting concluded, another name was mentioned:

The Witnesses.

No explanation was given, and no names were spoken.

As the meeting ended, Belaia seemed to sense something amiss and abruptly declared that they should end early for the evening.

An Unfortunate Discovery

After the meeting, Wrenn remained in spider form and followed Belaia home.

Inside the cleric's residence, Wrenn climbed along the wall in an attempt to read over Belaia's shoulder.

Unfortunately, the spider stood out against the wall, and Belaia's fiancé noticed it.

With a quick slap, he crushed the spider.

The impact broke Wrenn's transformation, and she suddenly found herself transformed back into a gnome and falling onto the couch.

Remarkably, the situation did not end in disaster.

Thinking quickly, Wrenn convinced Belaia that she had come out of concern for Durgat and, more specifically, for Durgat's daughter. She feared what Durgat might do to herself while imprisoned and believed she needed the comfort of her prayer leader.

Belaia accepted the explanation and promised to visit Durgat.

Wrenn was allowed to leave unharmed.

Watching the Flats

Throughout the evening, Xam made several passes by Durgat's apartment to observe the remaining shipbuilders.

No one fled.

No one appeared to be in hiding.

The members of the prayer group seemed to be continuing their lives as normal.

A New Plan

Starweaver's Reckoning Fifth Day, 14th of Palesun, 1137 AoD

The following morning, the group met at the temple and informed Kuserlion Faewen-FairyMaiden of everything Wrenn had overheard and of her rather unusual intrusion into Belaia's home.

Rather than punish Wrenn, Kuserlion saw an opportunity.

Since Belaia had promised to visit Durgat in prison, the Council devised a plan.

A public arrest would be staged.

Wrenn would be imprisoned in the cell beside Durgat, allowing her to overhear whatever conversation might take place between Durgat and Belaia.

To preserve the illusion, two Tide Wardens arrived to take Wrenn into custody.

Naturally, Wrenn attempted to flee.

And naturally, she did so by throwing eggs at the Wardens.

NPCs Interacted With

  • Kuserlion Faewen-FairyMaiden
  • Belaia Bhovunath

Note Taker's Recap

Wrenn, hidden in the meeting room, hears Belaia Bhovunath lead the meeting with the Durgrat's fellow shipbuilders, and it isn't long into the short meeting before they admit to being the ones responsible for the demonic symbols. It doesn't sound like it was the first attempt, nor will it be the last. Belaia seems to lead this group, but there are others involved: “ The Witnesses".

The party splits up for the night, most heading home. However, Xam does make a couple of walk-bys of Durgats Flat to check on the other shipbuilders. Wrenn tries her infiltration tactic again, but this time to observe Belaia in her home as a spider on the wall. Unfortunately, she is spotted scurrying across the wall and is slapped down, breaking the transformation spell. She is able to talk her way out of the situation for her concern with Durgat's safety and is able to leave unharmed with a promise of Belaia to visit Durgat as her priest.

After consulting with Kurselion in the morning about the home invasion, it becomes a good opportunity to arrange a public arrest of Wrenn and place her in a cell next to Durgat to overhear the meeting of Durgat and Belaia.

Meeting Dialogue

The Pagoda of Ara is quieter at night.

Most of the evening worshippers have already left, and only a handful of lanterns still burn along the temple corridors. The main prayer hall remains open, its polished stone floors reflecting soft candlelight beneath the towering statue of Ara, Goddess of Honor.

The meeting is not held in the main hall.

Like many small discussion groups hosted by the temple, this one gathers in a side chamber near the rear of the complex.

The room is modest but comfortable:
a circular wooden table
several mismatched chairs
shelves filled with philosophical and religious texts
a kettle warming slowly over a small brazier

Nothing about the room appears hidden or unusual.

The group itself is listed in temple records simply as a recurring private faith discussion attended by laborers and clergy.

The door opens quietly as the last attendee arrives.

Inside are:
Belaia Bhovunath
Duzus Calafin-LightHair
Whulehyn Rviaath
Alar Nughelath

The atmosphere is subdued.

Not secretive.

More the mood of tired workers meeting after a long and difficult week.

Belaia sits near the center of the table, hands folded calmly before her. The others settle into their seats in silence for a few moments while the kettle continues to hiss softly over the brazier.

No prayers begin the meeting.

No formal rituals are performed.

For several seconds, nobody speaks at all.

Whulehyn is the first to speak.

Quietly and quickly.

“They searched the apartment.”

Alar exhales sharply through his nose but says nothing.

Duzus remains standing near the wall, arms folded.

Belaia’s expression does not change.

“Did they find anything?”

Whulehyn shakes her head.

“No.”

A pause.

“But they knew where to look.”

Alar finally speaks.

“She confessed.”

His voice carries frustration.

“She admitted pushing Nelldove.”

Whulehyn looks sick at the mention of the name.

Duzus speaks carefully.

“If that is all she admitted, then the matter ends with her.”

Whulehyn immediately turns toward him.

“Ends with her?”

“She killed someone.”

Duzus answers flatly:

“She panicked.”

“She was never meant to handle this alone.”

Belaia finally intervenes before the argument escalates.

“Durgat made a tragic mistake.”

Her tone is calm. Measured.

“But panic does not change the truth.”

Silence again.

Belaia looks around the room.

“For eleven centuries this city has called denial hope.”

“No ships return.”

“No gods answer.”

“Still they build another vessel and tell themselves the ending has not already come.”

She speaks gently.

Whulehyn stares down at the table.

Alar rubs his temples.

Duzus watches Belaia carefully but says nothing.

Alar lowers his voice.

“The investigators found some of the markings.”

That finally breaks Belaia’s composure slightly.

“How much?”

“We don’t know.”

“The unscraped ones in the keel chamber.”

Whulehyn speaks almost in a whisper:

“They know the symbols are abyssal.”

Even Duzus stiffens slightly.

After a moment he says:

“But they don’t know the geometry.”

Belaia nods once.

“No.”

“The circle failed before completion.”

A long silence follows.

Then:
“The ship was never anchored.”

Whulehyn suddenly blurts:
“The water still boiled.”

No one answers immediately.

The memory clearly unsettles all of them.

Whulehyn continues:
“We felt something respond.”

“It worked.”

Belaia’s voice becomes very quiet.

“It almost worked.”

Alar looks directly at Belaia for the first time.

“And if it had?”

Belaia meets his gaze evenly.

“Then the Dawn Seeker would finally carry truth instead of lies.”

Alar looks away.

He does not seem reassured.

Duzus finally asks the question hanging over the room.

“Have the Witnesses been informed?”

Belaia nods once.

“Yes.”

No elaboration.

No names.

Whulehyn’s composure finally cracks.

“What if they keep digging?”

“What if Durgat says more?”

Belaia answers immediately.

“She won’t.”

“She still understands why we began.”

Belaia slowly rises from the table.

“The city believes hope is a virtue.”

“But hope is what keeps this suffering alive.”

“The world ended long ago.”

“We are merely the only people willing to admit it.”

The room falls silent again.

Then—
Belaia’s eyes shift slightly toward the chamber doorway.

Not alarmed.

Not certain.

Just aware.

A faint pause.

As though she sensed movement somewhere beyond the room.

And quietly she says:
“…we should end early tonight.”
