New Leads at the Temple

Starweaver's Reckoning Fifth Day, 14th of Palesun, 1137 AoD

Following Wrenn's discovery of the prayer group's true purpose, we returned to the Pagoda of Ara to learn more about Belaia and her connections.

There we discovered that Belaia Bhovunath led a second faith discussion group.

The group included:

Most concerning of all, we learned that Soledad Leon and Domitila Quintana were Belaia's closest friends.

The group's next meeting would be held that very night.

Waiting at the Twinkling Flats

While Pethi and the others investigated the temple, Xam and Venathrax kept watch outside the Twinkling Flats, home to the remaining shipbuilders.

It was the weekend, and most of the residents were gathered in the common room.

Eventually, two of the conspirators left the building:

The pair separated soon afterward.

Believing Alar to be the more nervous and vulnerable of the two, we chose to follow him.

A Visit in the Cells

Meanwhile, Wrenn remained in her cell awaiting Belaia's promised visit to Durgat.

Belaia eventually arrived and spoke privately with Durgat Stormbringer.

Wrenn was able to overhear portions of their conversation.

Several important details emerged:

  • The outer structure of the ritual had been completed.
  • Something had answered their call.
  • The work had paused following Nelldove's death and Durgat's arrest.
  • Durgat was not carrying this burden alone.

At one point, Belaia brought muffins for Durgat.

Durgat promptly ate an entire muffin.

It was perhaps the most ordinary thing to happen in an otherwise deeply unsettling conversation.

Once the meeting concluded, one of the guards quietly released Wrenn in accordance with the Council's plan.

Wrenn immediately disappeared from her cell.

When the startled guard looked around in confusion, she simply reappeared behind him.

"Prison break," she declared.

Confronting Alar

Outside the city, Venathrax and Xam intercepted Alar.

At first, the conversation was calm.

Then Venathrax mentioned demons.

That changed everything.

The moment the word was spoken, Alar attempted to flee.

Venathrax seized him before he could escape, and with Xam's assistance the two escorted him directly to the Council Chambers for questioning.

The Interrogation

By the time Wrenn arrived, Alar was already seated before Kuserlion Faewen-FairyMaiden.

The interrogation began cautiously.

Then Corq decided to be less subtle.

First, he used magic to expose Alar's hidden corruption.

Under the glow of an orange Faerie Fire, the party saw what appeared to be demonic corruption oozing from him.

Then Corq cast Command.

One word.

"Divulge."

The answer changed everything.

"We were trying to create a beacon on the ship so the demons would come back and destroy the island."

Silence followed.

For the first time, the party understood the true purpose of the symbols aboard the Dawn Seeker.

The conspirators had not been attempting to summon power.

They had been attempting to summon annihilation.

Further questioning revealed several more facts:
* Alar did not know what had answered their ritual.
* Belaia was one of the Witnesses.
* He had been recruited through one of the temple's faith groups.

At last, the shape of the conspiracy became clear.

The murder of Nelldove Sivmil, the symbols aboard the Dawn Seeker, and the secret meetings at the temple were all pieces of the same plot.

There were people within Agrovionimb who believed the world should end.

And they were trying to invite the demons back to finish the job.

NPCs Interacted With

  • Kuserlion Faewen-FairyMaiden
  • Alar Nughelath

Note Taker's Recap

At the temple, the Pagoda of Ara, it is discovered that the cleric Belaia leads a second prayer group which includes her best friends Soledad and Domitila. Their next meeting is tonight!

Outside the apartment building, Xam and Venathrax watch the comings and goings of the 2 shipwrights, Whulehyn and Alar. Eventually, they see Pethi arrive and escort Durgot's family to the park. Shortly after the shipwrights leave and split up, we follow Alar, whom is following Pethi's party. Alar is confronted by Venathrax, and with a bit of intimidation and the name drop of demon worshiping, Alar tries to make a run for it. He is escorted to Kuserlion at the Council building.

Belaia visits Durgot in the jail where Wrenn has been waiting to overhear their discussion. Afterwards, one of the guards in league with our objective lets Wrenn out of the cells. Leaving us all back to the chambers under the Council building where Alar is being interrogated. With a smart use of orange fairy fire, the image of demonic corruption oozing off of Alar, and Corq’s command spell of Divulge, finally reveal their big plan: “We were trying to create a beacon on the ship to the demons so they would come back and destroy the island."

Discord Notes

1:15 PM Anchor: Based on the conversation of the demon loving criminal traitors that was relayed to us from Wrenn. At some point where the group is together and not around others to overhear, Anchor starts rambling...

"Some random thoughts popped into my brain, not normal for me at all by the way, about the demon worshipper's meeting. Like someone is revising my normal thought patterns. Seems obvious Belaia is deeply involved and, along with Duzus, seems unfazed by the death of Nelldove. She only broke momentarily about us finding the runes. Duzus only hesitated at the mention of us knowing the runes were Abyssal. Belaia also seems to be really devoted to this group/cult. Duzus spoke of the geometry of the symbols and Belaia agreed. These two seem to know more than Whulehyn and Alar. Whulehyn spoke first and seemed nervous, also later looked sick at the mention of Nelldove's death. Seemed to be blurting out a lot of information. Possibly a weak link? Wrenn said Alar also seemed nervous and was the one who knew we found markings. How much was said out loud at the Twinkling Flats when we went to investigate Durgat's place? Alar and Whulehyn both live there and might have overheard a lot. Maybe none of this matters, was just working through some thoughts."

A flicker of green radiance momentarily surrounds Anchor's eyes, then fades to a dull glow.

4:21 PM Wrenn: Nobody knoooooooows the trouble I’ve seeeeeeeen
Nobody knoooooooooows my sorrooooooooooow
Nobody knows the trouble I’ve seeeeeeen
Nobody knows but Nelldove.”

4:31 PM Corq: "That's a very good point about Whulehyn, Anchor. I'm pretty certain the only topics discussed at the Flats was the accidental murder, no speak of demonic symbols. We may have asked about the markings to her fiancé, but wouldn't have divulged their abyssal origin." Corq scans the group, resting on Xam and Vash.

"Look, I normally wouldn't even dream of asking someone else to commit a crime, and Wren already got caught..." Corq trails for a moment.

"Whuleyhn and the otherswill likely return to work, with the other builders. We can't risk trying to investigate the same location twice after getting caught, but what if you two go check out Duzus' place? He seemed to know the most about the geometry, as Anchor mentioned. He must be a bigger part than the other two builders. Maybe one of us make a bit of a show offering condolences to our murderer's fiancé and child? Giving you two an opportunity to see if there's any evidence in Duzus' abode?"

4:42 PM Corq: "Or, and I'm not a big a fan of this idea, but it's better than not doing anything." Corq sighs, dropping his shoulders while folding his arms.

"Venathrax and Anchor, find Whuleyhn, and 'talk' to him. I've seen how terrifying you two can be, when you want to be, and with how nervous Whuleyhm and Alar seem to be, maybe we can pressure their better sided conscious and they'll give us something."

4:44 PM Corq: "My staff my parents gifted me, well..." Corq tightens his grip on the staffs haft. "It let's me kinda, charm the minds of others so I might be able to help there. I try to avoid magics that affect others' minds, but I understand, logically, they have uses for good, not always evil."

4:45 PM Corq: (I can use charges to cast Charm Person, Command, and Comprehend Languages.)

5:44 PM Venathrax: "I would be willing to have a conversation with Whulehyn or Alar. But it is essential that we get them when they are alone. They must not be seen talking to us. So, I would suggest that we trail one or both of these targets until we can take them alone and unawares. Stealth and… persuasiveness… will be essential."

6:10 PM Venathrax: "Also, it occurs to me that it might be worthwhile to have a friendly talk with Durgat's daughter, perhaps in the context of offering sympathy and support to the accused's family. It's possible that the conspirators discussed some details of their plan casually while in their home and adults can often be careless about what they speak freely of when a child is present. She may be able to provide us with a lead. But I will leave that to
someone more… delicate than myself."

6:48 PM Xam: “@Corq , I’m willing to do a bit of snooping, the quicker we uncover this demonic plot the sooner the free drinks and fame start back up, even more than before!”

8:15 PM Dungeon Master: cough cough

8:27 PM Anchor: Anchor tells the rest of the group that he really doesn't think Kuserlion is involved. Just a gut feeling based on knowing him since sometime shortly after he was born 646 years ago and his actions since being on the Council for the last 400 or so years. "Maybe not tell him every little detail. Summarize what do know and think we know about Belaia and the rest of the shipwrights that are in the temple meeting group."

9:20 PM Wrenn: nobody knows why I do what I doooooooo
nobody knows but Jesuuuuuuuuuus

10:34 PM Wrenn: Wrenn clangs her tin cup against the wall of the cell and demands to see Kuserlion

10:53 PM Dungeon Master: Guard: "No."

5:42 AM Pethi Wiselander: "I'll talk with the daughter. Part of my job with the temple is to offer sympathy and support and I am worried for her. To be so young and to have something so tragic happen in your life... " Pethi trails off.

11:31 AM Pethi Wiselander: “Anyway,” Pethi resumes after a quick shake of her head as she regathers her thoughts. “We have some children’s stories at the temple I can bring since she seemed to really enjoy having everyone telling her stories.”

8:45 PM Anchor: "I like all these options, but really think our main support has been Kuserlion. We should tell him what we know. He has centuries of knowledge about many topics, and I think is our best bet for help regarding the unknown magic."

8:35 AM Pethi Wiselander: “I agree Anchor. He’s our best resource right now. Wish I felt confident in asking Dovos, but with what Kuaerlion has told us and even my fellow temple members involved with this, I don’t know how far this has spread.” Pethi’s hands start to run over her prayer beads.

10:59 AM Venathrax: Q: Age and species of Whulehyn Rviaath (f) and Alar Nughelath (m)?
2:25 PM Dungeon Master: Whulehyn Rviaath
39 year old female triton shipbuilder.

Alar Nughelath
35 year old male triton shipbuilder.

9:24 PM Anchor: Anchor's eyes flicker with a forest green light like leaves fluttering in the wind. He remains motionless as if he has turned into a metal statue. Finally, he nods to himself, coming to a decision...

"Kuserlion has supported us at every step and was the one who allowed us full access to investigate this mess. He needs to be informed of what we know, and it sounds like we are mostly in agreement."

"Agrovionimb is all that is left, and this demonic group, cult, whatever, want to end it. Created over a millennia ago for a war that I never saw, because of the demons. Think I found my war."

"Venathrax, Whulehyn or Alar, or both? As soon as Wrenn is done listening in at the jail, let's go take them. Anyone else have thoughts? If not, let's move out."

Anchor nods to the group, asks for them all to accompany him, goes to Kuserlion, and fills him in on our findings. He then asks for Wrenn to be released quietly after getting a chance to listen in on Durgat and Belaia.

8:42 AM Dungeon Master: After Anchor lays it all out for Kuserlion, he says, "So, if these shipwrights are a 'cell' like you described. Perhaps there are other 'cells' that meet at the temple in a similar fashion. Perhaps you should look into the other prayer groups at the Pagoda of Ara to see if any others are constructed like this one?"

9:29 AM Pethi Wiselander: Pethi's head sags down as she runs her hands over her prayer beads after hearing Kuserlion's words. "But." The group can see she's having trouble expressing herself. "How?" The speed she's running the prayer beads through her hands increases. "We do so much good for the whole of Agrovionimb. So many people rely on us and we have great people." Pethi sighs, "Even the thought of what Belaia's doing is shocking. Now," Pethi pauses again, "what if,... No. I can't even think that."

11:17 AM Pethi Wiselander: "They raised me. And most have been good to me." After a pause, "I'm sorry." The speed she runs the beads through her hands slow down. "It's just hard to grasp the idea that more like Balaia could exist in the temple. Who can I trust anymore?"

11:18 AM Pethi Wiselander: "But I'll do what I can."

11:26 AM Venathrax: "Let's not lose our heads here. One point is not a pattern. So far, we only know of one group of malcontents. I think tracking down these 'Witnesses' is more productive than worrying about widespread corruption in the temple."

3:12 PM Dungeon Master: all Kuserlion suggested was looking for a pattern. He did not say there was a pattern.

3:18 PM Venathrax: comment was directed at Pethi, not Kuserlion.

4:27 PM Venathrax: "All due respect, @Anchor, you don't exactly blend in. I think trailing Whulehyn and Alar is a task best suited to myself and @Xam, seeing as he's already been casing the apartment building where they live. The two of us should be able to follow either one of them until there is an opportunity to get them alone for questioning."

7:04 PM Anchor: Nod to Venathrax.

"Totally agreed that I have a rather unique appearance. If you would like to take Xam and do this a bit more quietly, by all means, that is tactically sound. I was going to be a bit more direct and just walk up, grab them, and then take them to the closest Tidewarden barracks for a bit more of a "direct" questioning session. After all, we have been given permission to fully investigate this situation."

9:00 PM Pethi Wiselander: "I'm sorry. You're right. It's just ..." Pethi takes a deep, mediative breath. "You grew up there too. While you didn't follow the same path I did, they are still family. This whole thing with Belaia, and what the esteemed council member alluded to... I want to believe she's the only rotten apple there. But if we can get a lead on these 'Witnesses', that'll be our best bet. I think you and Xam can help there. And I'll do what I can in the temple."

9:59 PM Dungeon Master: @Andore At this point I need to know who is doing either task: library duty at the temple, stalking Whulehyn and Alar.

11:38 PM Anchor: Anchor, being a bit noticeable, would wait for after Belaia meets with Durgat, if the meeting happens, and then go to meet with Wrenn when she is eventually released. He would suggest that Whulehyn seemed a bit more nervous from the narrative Wrenn provided of the meeting. That one might be easier to break...

8:51 AM Xam: Xam will be stalking.

8:58 AM Pethi Wiselander: Pethi, of course, will be on library duty at the temple.

12:08 PM Venathrax: Venathrax is going with Xam.

12:08 PM Venathrax: Weren't you going to go console Durgat's family and ask the daughter some questions?

12:09 PM Pethi Wiselander: "We have some children's stories in the library I'd like to take to her."

1:24 PM Dungeon Master: You may not currently do 2 things. No RP until everybody tells me which path they are taking.

2:02 PM Dungeon Master: @Andore please pick a path:
Path 1: Go to Church and review other faith groups like Kuserlion said: Pethi, Corq
Path 2: Stalk Whulehyn and Alar like creepy creeps: Xam, Venathrax
Path 3: Rot in Jail: Wren
Path 4: "Look, I'm Nonchalant": Anchor
Path 5: Go to the secret council library and research demons: Vash

2:37 PM Anchor: Anchor, will be very obvious wandering around town so if anyone is watching the party members, he might serve as a distraction of sorts. Watch for anyone that might be following or showing undue curiosity. Since I'm waiting for the rotting in jail person to finish with said rotting.

3:25 PM Vash: Kuserlion said we were permitted access to his secret library, I know I was told to choose one of two paths, but if a third is open to me, I would go ...

The missing piece of our puzzle is the purpose of the circle, I want to try to track that down.

3:28 PM Vash: If that avenue is not available to me, then Stalking is probably my best
option.
3:29 PM Dungeon Master: Path 1: Go to Church and review other faith groups like Kuserlion said: Pethi, Corq, Vash
Path 2: Stalk Whulehyn and Alar like creepy creeps: Xam, Venathrax,
Path 3: Rot in Jail: Wren,
Path 4: "Look, I'm Nonchalant": Anchor,

3:36 PM Corq: Wait if the secret library is an option, Corq 100% would spend time there.

3:37 PM Dungeon Master: So... just to be clear...
Your patron, as a group, suggested a specific action. And 6 of the members of the party have said: "Fuck off, we're doing something else"?

You do you, but I'm just making sure I understand.

3:41 PM Venathrax: notmypatron{: .hash}

4:44 PM Vash: I missed this, I claim illness, fever, exhaustion. DM threw us a bone.

7:17 PM Wrenn: Rotting activated

7:18 PM Wrenn: You’ve met us

10:53 AM Dungeon Master: Group 1: The Smart Ones
@Pethi Wiselander @Corq @Vash

You are at the Pagoda of Ara to ask Asnyn Galalynith if you can do a deep dive into the temple's private faith groups and community meetings. Please proceed.

4:41 PM Vash: Presumably, Pethi will be our spokesperson with Asnyn; but on the way to the temple I will mention to my companions @Pethi Wiselander and @Corq that our method of discovery of the first group ... spying ... is no longer available and sit in jail at the moment. Is our purpose to try to winnow down the groups to a likely or suspect smaller list that we can then observe? Are we sharing what we know, or have we already, with the head of the temple?

6:43 PM Corq: "I've been wracking my brain to try and find a subtle enough falsehood to get what we seek without arousing suspicions. It'd going to be common news soon that Wren got arrested, for being in Belaia's home. People don't know we're investigating cult cells, but they do know we solved the murder. What if there's evidence Durgat wasn't alone that night, we're looking into possible conspiracies between the shorter lived species and the longer lived ones that take up most of the higher ranks in the shipwright's group. The Tidewardens aren't getting involved to not start a panic, nor insinuate the local guard aren't capable of keeping people safe. A couple of curious minds looking for patterns is lower key than the guard stomping through the halls."

Corq pauses to catch his breath.

"At least, that's an angle I think we could take, to avoid any mention of demon worship..."

Corq's voice trails off low, as he grips his staff tightly in his hands, looking at the ground.

6:47 PM Venathrax: Ope!

7:28 PM Dungeon Master: you aren't in that group, you're stalking people

8:48 PM Vash: "I think that Pethi was going to express some interest in leading a group and ask about the others and introduce you and I as possible new members. We would be asking about the other groups and their membership to see if Pethi would have interest in leading or if we would like to participate"
