Mauricio Maxima's Magnificent Manual of Mushrooms
Entry XXVII: On the Meadow Mushroom and the Destroying Angel¶
“Of all the errors a novice forager may make, none is so final as confusing sustenance with silence.”
— Mauricio Maxima, Third Edition
General Overview¶
Among the many edible fungi that grace the temperate meadows and lowland clearings of Andórë, few are as prized by cooks and commonfolk alike as the Meadow Mushroom. Mild in flavor, plentiful in season, and easily prepared, it has sustained travelers and villagers for generations.
Unfortunately, it grows in close companionship with one of nature’s most insidious deceivers: the Destroying Angel.
Nature, as ever, offers no warning beyond what it has already provided. It is the responsibility of the observer to notice.
The Meadow Mushroom¶
Edible — Safe when properly identified
- Cap: Smooth, rounded in youth, flattening with age; white to faintly cream
- Gills: Pink when young, deepening to brown with maturity
- Stem: Solid, lacking ornamentation; no pronounced ring
- Scent: Mild, earthy, often pleasant
- Habitat: Open meadows, grazing lands, and field edges,
The Meadow Mushroom is a reliable staple, particularly in lands once cultivated or grazed. Its presence often indicates healthy soil and stable ecosystems.
The Destroying Angel¶
Lethal — Death often certain
- Cap: Pure white, often pristine even in poor weather
- Gills: Always white, regardless of age
- Stem: Slender, with a delicate, skirt-like ring near the upper portion
- Base: Often bulbous, sometimes partially hidden beneath soil or grass
- Scent: Faint, sometimes deceptively pleasant
The Destroying Angel is among the most dangerous organisms known to mortal kind. Consumption leads to a slow and agonizing failure of the body, often preceded by a false period of recovery that has doomed many who believed themselves spared.
Key Distinguishing Features¶
When in doubt, remember:
- Gill Color is Truth
- Pink to brown → Meadow Mushroom,
- Pure white → Destroying Angel,
- The Ring is a Warning
- Absence of a ring → likely safe
- Presence of a thin, skirt-like ring → leave it untouched
- Purity is Suspicion,
- Mushrooms that appear too perfect, too white, or untouched by insects should be regarded with caution,
Field Guidance¶
If uncertainty remains, do not harvest.
In Andórë, nature is not governed by mercy, nor does it bend to intention. It rewards knowledge and punishes assumption with equal consistency.
Many who believed themselves careful now serve as quiet warnings beneath the soil.
Maxima's Final Note¶
“A full stomach is of little use to the dead. When choosing between hunger and certainty, choose hunger.”
